The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII has called on government and Management of ECG to engage with the protesting staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to resolve the ongoing friction between the staffs and the current Managing Director ECG, Mr. Agyemang Budu.
This Nana Amoasi VII made known when he spoke on the Starr FM Midday news today, following some protests by workers of ECG at the Western Regional office of the power distributor. The disturbing news from the Western Region follows series of nationwide protests by staff of ECG, calling for the removal of its MD to salvage the company.
Among other things, the aggrieved staff are protesting against actions of the MD which they find inimical to the progress of the company. They accuse the MD of outsourcing revenue collection from its customers to third parties outside of the company. They also accuse the MD of supervising procurement breaches in the awarding of contracts for the construction of six substations.
Prior to today’s protest, leaders of the group had petitioned the President and the Minister of Energy to look into the matter and rid the company off its MD to salvage the company’s fortunes.
The protest held today in the western region involved a two-hour sit down strike and a press briefing.
However, touching om these issues, Nana Amoasi VII indicated that the IES was concerned with what was happening as it had a potential to affect efficient power delivery if it is not quickly resolved.
He also stressed on how management of the company for months now had failed to pay some staff emoluments. He stated that ‘management has failed to pay staff commitment to insurance policies, mutual fund, credit union and prudential fund. “If you make it difficult for them to access their own conditions of service, then of course they can’t just sit down for it to go the way it is going.”
He admonished government to “as soon as possible engage the management and the staff” to resolve the issue
