Petition in to Intervene In the Ongoing Security Invasion of the Volta Region
We write to extend our warmest greetings to you, Sir, and to acknowledge the immense stability and peace you have brought to this country. It is this peace and cohesion you bequeathed to us which is under threat as a result of the ruling government’s determined desire to intimidate a certain tribe whose only mistake is that they are located on the eastern border of our country. We write of the recent invasion of the Volta region by security forces to cow inhabitants of that great land into submission.
It is against this backdrop that we, the members of the Young Cadres Association (YCA) who draw our inspiration from your heroic exploits, write to petition you to seek your urgent intervention with the government to end the deployment of the security forces to the Volta region. The deployment, ostensibly, is to help patrol the borders of the country and prevent people infected with Covid-19 from entering the country. But we hold a contrary view and believe that the government is only interested in disenfranchising the people of the Volta region. It is trite knowledge that the government’s real intent is to use these forces to intimidate the good people of the Volta region from participating in the up-coming voter registration exercise which will play to the government’s advantage as millions of people from the stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be disenfranchised.
As our founder and, undoubtedly the most powerful voice from the Volta region, we would like to appeal to you to use your high office to impress upon the government to immediately remove the security forces currently deployed in the Volta region to enable inhabitants of the region go about their duties as lawful citizens of Ghana.
Although we contend that security forces are needed to keep the peace of the country, especially at the country’s borders, singling out the Volta region for such an operation smacks of an ulterior motive behind this deployment.
We count on your high office to swiftly end this state terrorism and to end the unwarranted intimidation of the peaceful people of the Volta region. Thank you.
(President, Young Cadres Association)
(General Secretary, Young Cadres Association)
